Chapter Ten

The morning was overcast and almost dingy looking, like God forgot to wipe the film off the window glass. Valerie drove to the first house showing in a daze. She was gliding like a drone set on autopilot. She’d only slept off and on for three hours and her mind felt foggy, but her body was live wired with excitement. Her heart was hopping and her veins thrumming with thoughts of Dana.

She pulled into the driveway of the small but quaint house fifteen minutes early. She wanted to get settled and take several deep breaths before she saw Dana. She couldn’t explain it, but she felt like she needed to be prepared somehow. As if that would help calm her insides. She hurried up the front path, set down her stuff, retrieved the key, and unlocked the two doors. Then she gathered her things and hurried inside to set up on the kitchen counter.

The front room was surprisingly spacious with a fireplace nestled in the back wall. The hardwood floors glowed in the morning light as she opened the stylish drapes. She smiled with her hands on her hips. Dana would like this one. The ceilings were high and the room felt bright and airy. The kitchen was gorgeous with new countertops and appliances. And there was a large bedroom tucked down the hall along with two smaller ones and two baths.

Yes, Dana would love it.

She rubbed her hands together as if they were cold and then smoothed down her light blue sleeveless blouse and tight fitting navy skirt. Her shoes were new and expensive and had yet to be broken in. She wanted more than anything to kick them off, but she wanted to look especially good for Dana. She’d even spent extra time on her makeup and she’d changed her jewelry five times, finally settling on a long string of pearls and matching earrings. Elegant yet simple. And she’d also done something extra special…a little secret that may or may not be shared. But still, just knowing about it was exciting her to no end. She could feel her secret as she moved, and the tickle of it was making her wet with anticipation.

A rush of heat came over her as she heard a car pull in. A door closed and she counted the footsteps. Seventeen. Silence. Her heart stopped. And then, a voice.

“Knock, knock.”

Her heart fluttered and then pounded so hard she got a head rush. “Come in,” she said as she fingered her throat.

The security door squeaked, and Dana stepped through with a shy smile. She turned slightly and locked the deadbolt, then pushed the main door closed as well. Valerie noticed but her mind brushed by it because she was too focused on the way she looked. Her thick hair was up in a loose bun and she had on khaki slacks with a patterned vest. Her boots were brown, shiny, and thick heeled. Valerie cleared her throat and tried to look away from the muscled arms, the strong but wonderfully feminine hands.
